Megaworld Hotels and Resorts Recognized as Fully Muslim-Friendly Properties

The Philippine Department of Tourism’s Landmark Recognition for Megaworld Hotels and Resorts

In a significant leap forward for the hospitality sector in the Philippines, the Department of Tourism has recently awarded certification to 13 properties under Megaworld Hotels and Resorts (MHR), declaring them 100 percent Muslim-friendly. This milestone positions MHR as the first hospitality chain in the country to encompass all its properties with certifications that cater specifically to Islamic tourism—a crucial acknowledgment in an increasingly globalized travel landscape.

Celebrating Inclusivity in Tourism

On December 18, at an official ceremony, Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco presented the Muslim-Friendly Accommodation Establishment (MFAE) certificate to MHR’s managing director, Cleofe Albiso. The event underscored the government’s commitment to inclusivity within the tourism industry—a sentiment echoed by Frasco. She remarked, “The awarding of this certification for Megaworld is a significant milestone for our collective efforts to provide inclusivity in the tourism industry… to transform in a manner that is sustainable, resilient, and, most importantly, inclusive.”

This certification not only highlights the need for diverse offerings in tourism but also reflects a broader intention to accommodate travelers from various backgrounds. The development is particularly vital as the tourism sector seeks recovery and transformation following the challenges posed by global events and a shift in travel trends.

Understanding Muslim-Friendly Accommodations

MHR’s response to the certification, articulated by Albiso, emphasizes the chain’s dedication to creating welcoming environments for Muslim travelers. “This achievement demonstrates our unwavering commitment to creating spaces that embrace inclusivity,” she stated. The hotels are equipped with Halal-certified kitchens, prayer rooms, and Muslim-friendly amenities, designed to enhance the comfort of guests and uphold their cultural practices.

The certified properties include a mix of establishments such as:

  • Belmont Hotel Manila
  • Belmont Hotel Boracay
  • Belmont Hotel Mactan
  • Savoy Hotel Manila
  • Savoy Hotel Boracay
  • Savoy Hotel Mactan Newtown
  • Eastwood Richmonde Hotel
  • Richmonde Hotel Ortigas
  • Richmonde Hotel Iloilo
  • Kingsford Hotel Manila
  • Twin Lakes Hotel

Moreover, Hotel Lucky Chinatown and Grand Westside Hotel are on track to receive their halal certifications in the upcoming year, further expanding the options available to Muslim travelers in the region.

Adapting to the Unique Needs of Muslim Travelers

An essential aspect of MHR’s commitment is the training provided to its staff. During the award ceremony, Albiso highlighted that 100 percent of the properties’ regular employees have undergone rigorous training to meet the specific needs of Muslim guests. This preparation goes beyond physical accommodations; it integrates cultural sensitivity and service excellence, ensuring that every guest feels respected and valued throughout their stay.

This proactive approach is illustrative of the changing dynamics in the hospitality industry. As more travelers seek tailored experiences that respect their beliefs and practices, hotels must adapt to meet these expectations. MHR’s initiative serves as an exemplary model in this regard.

Building Partnerships for Growth

The recognition of MHR as a fully certified Muslim-friendly chain stems from a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Department of Tourism, established during the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai last May. This collaboration highlights the strategic importance of fostering international relationships and partnerships to promote tourism in the Philippines.

Following the signing of the MOU, MHR has actively participated in key trade shows, including SALAAM: The Halal and Trade Expo, the 31st Travel and Tour Expo VisMin Edition in Cagayan de Oro City, and the Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Summit. These events reinforce MHR’s commitment to engaging with the Muslim travel segment and showcase the Philippines as a premier destination for diverse global travelers.

In summary, Megaworld Hotels and Resorts’ certification as a pioneer in Muslim-friendly accommodations signifies more than just a badge of honor; it reflects a growing awareness and acknowledgment of the diverse needs within the modern tourism industry. As more travelers seek respectful and inclusive experiences, MHR stands prepared to lead the charge in the Philippines, embracing change and fostering a welcoming environment for all.
