Sports Illustrated Resorts Announces Expansion to Chicago

In an exciting development for sports enthusiasts and travelers alike, Sports Illustrated Resorts is setting its sights on Chicago, a city known for its rich tapestry of sports culture. This endeavor is part of Travel + Leisure Co.’s strategic expansion, which is aimed at creating a new brand specifically designed for sports aficionados and fans of the beloved Sports Illustrated magazine.

The Chicago property is expected to open its doors by late 2026, forging its identity in The Loop—a vibrant area located just a stone’s throw away from Michigan Avenue along the picturesque Chicago River. What’s particularly noteworthy is that the hotel will remain operational throughout the construction process, ensuring minimal disruption for guests.

When the transformation is complete, the resort will feature 250 meticulously designed guestrooms. One of the standout elements of this project will be the hotel’s updated lobby, which will pay homage to its historical roots as a former financial institution. This means that the grand staircase—a symbol of the building’s rich past—will be preserved, cleverly blending old-world charm with modern enhancements.

The furnishing and design elements throughout the resort will showcase the Sports Illustrated brand through striking imagery and contemporary, sports-inspired aesthetics. This thoughtful design approach aims to create an immersive experience for guests, transporting them into the exciting world of sports.

A wide array of amenities will elevate the guest experience, including an exclusive owner’s lounge and a state-of-the-art fitness center designed for both casual gym-goers and serious athletes. Guests can also look forward to a variety of dining options: a street-level coffee shop for a quick caffeine fix, a full-service restaurant for more lavish meals, and a lively sports bar to catch up on the latest games with fellow fans.

Geoff Richards, the Chief Operating Officer at Travel + Leisure Co., has expressed the significance of launching this brand in Chicago. “Chicago is where legends are made,” he stated, highlighting the city’s legacy of over 40 championship trophies across 11 professional and college teams. The passion Chicagoans have for their sports teams is infectious and creates a unique atmosphere that few other cities can replicate.

“With this new resort, we’re creating a destination where that same championship spirit lives year-round,” Richards added. This innovative approach melds the rich storytelling heritage of Sports Illustrated with the dynamic culture of Chicago, ensuring that every visit to the resort will be filled with energy and excitement.

This upcoming Chicago location will join previously announced resorts in Nashville, Tennessee, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The strategic expansion into these sports-centric cities signals a bold move for Sports Illustrated Resorts, allowing it to tap into the vibrant sports communities that define these locales.
