Mainland Capital Partners with Russell Property Group to Unveil Sheraton Christchurch

Mainland Capital and Russell Property Group have recently announced an exciting development in Christchurch’s hospitality landscape. They have signed a hotel management agreement with Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) to operate the historic Noah’s Hotel redevelopment under the globally renowned Sheraton Hotels and Resorts brand. This collaboration not only symbolizes a pivotal advancement in Christchurch’s ongoing regeneration but also marks a significant commitment to enhancing the city’s appeal as a premier destination for both leisure and business travelers.

The Sheraton Christchurch is set to grace the city with its presence in mid-2027. The hotel promises to be a transformative hospitality destination, breathing new life into a landmark site through bold architectural design and vibrant public spaces that encourage interaction and community engagement. This redevelopment epitomizes the growing metropolitan energy of Christchurch and stands as a testament to its evolving identity as a world-class city.

Strategically located beside the Te Pae Convention Centre and with sweeping views of the Avon River, the ambitious $150 million-plus project aims to offer much-needed premium accommodation. This development is not only about enhancing the skyline; it’s an essential addition to the heart of Christchurch designed to cater to both tourists exploring the city and business professionals attending events at the convention center.

Ben Bridge, Director of Mainland Capital, expressed his enthusiasm for securing Marriott International as the hotel operator. He stated, “Partnering with a world-class hospitality brand like Sheraton validates both our vision for this project and Christchurch’s emergence as a destination for leisure and corporate travel.” This partnership is anticipated to add a renewed vibrancy to the city’s riverside precinct, promoting an exceptional hospitality experience for both visitors and the local community.

Brett Russell, Managing Director of Russell Property Group, highlighted the importance of collaboration in the successful execution of developmental projects. He shared, “Our long-standing relationship with Marriott International has been built on trust and a shared commitment to excellence.” With Marriott’s operational expertise backing this flagship property, there is a strong belief that the Sheraton Christchurch will become a cornerstone within the local hospitality sector, ultimately driving substantial economic benefits for the entire Canterbury region.

The new hotel will be operated by Emmons Developments New Zealand Limited, a consortium of New Zealand equity investors led by the joint venture between Mainland Capital and Russell Property Group. Spearheading the project are Ben Bridge and Brett Russell, bringing together their complementary expertise to ensure a successful outcome.

Teaming up with acclaimed design partners from Dalman Architects and Nic Graham & Associates Interior Design Studio, the Sheraton Christchurch is poised to feature 240 premium guest rooms and suites spread across 14 storeys. Guests can anticipate a range of amenities, including a signature restaurant, a rooftop bar offering stunning panoramic views, a club lounge, versatile event spaces, and a wellness-focused fitness center. The design aims to honor the historical essence of Christchurch while embracing modern aesthetics and comfort.

Construction is already underway. With demolition and foundational strengthening now complete, the project will meet Sheraton’s global brand standards and adhere to New Zealand’s rigorous building regulations, ensuring the highest quality and safety for future guests.

Richard Crawford, Vice President of Hotel Development for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific at Marriott International, emphasized the significance of adding Sheraton Christchurch to the brand’s regional portfolio. He remarked, “Sheraton is our most established brand in the Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific region, and its presence in Christchurch will play a pivotal role in the CBD’s revitalization.” With its prime location and exceptional facilities, the hotel aims to cater to both tourists and business travelers alike, acknowledging Christchurch as the South Island’s principal gateway for tourism and a launching point for Antarctic expeditions.

Having made its mark globally since 1937, Sheraton Hotels and Resorts remains the most widely recognized brand in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio, encompassing nearly 430 hotels across more than 70 countries. As a pioneer among international hotel brands, Sheraton has long served as a symbol of hospitality excellence, providing timeless spaces for gatherings and community interactions.

With the addition of Sheraton Christchurch, Marriott International will bolster its presence in New Zealand, now operating three hotels in the country, alongside the JW Marriott and Four Points by Sheraton properties in Auckland. This expansion highlights the growing demand for quality accommodation in the region, paving the way for more visitors to experience the unique charm and vibrancy of Christchurch.
