Mayor Launches “Kids Ride Free” Initiative on Public Transport

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness Launches ‘Kids Go Free’ Initiative to Ease Family Travel Costs

In a heartening move aimed at supporting families across the North East, Mayor Kim McGuinness has introduced a region-wide ‘Kids Go Free’ initiative for public transportation during school holidays. This ambitious plan, which brings together various bus operators from Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, and Durham, is set to transform the travel landscape for local families by making public transport more accessible and affordable.

Free Travel for Kids Under 12

The initiative allows families to travel for free on public transport with children aged 11 and under. Specifically, families can take advantage of this offer by having up to three children travel free of charge when accompanied by an adult holding a valid ticket or a concessionary pass. This initiative will be implemented during the school holidays throughout the coming year, significantly alleviating the financial burden associated with travel during what is often a costly time for families.

A Step Towards Sustainability and Accessibility

In conjunction with the ‘Kids Go Free’ initiative, the Tyne and Wear Metro and Shields Ferry are already offering a permanent price promise, allowing children to travel for free all year round under the same conditions. Alongside previous promotions by various bus operators, the current scheme represents a concerted effort to ensure families can venture out and explore the North East’s beautiful landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant communities without the heavy toll on their wallets.

Addressing Child Poverty: A Central Priority

At the heart of McGuinness’s initiative is the urgent need to tackle child poverty, a significant issue in the region. Working closely with local bus operators to fulfill her manifesto promise to launch the ‘Kids Go Free’ scheme, the Mayor acknowledges that transport costs can pose a serious barrier for families, particularly those with lower incomes. By eliminating these costs during school holidays, she hopes to provide a much-needed relief that empowers families to enjoy quality time together without the stress of financial constraints.

Feedback from Transportation Leaders

Ben Maxfield, Chair of the local operators’ association NEBus, expressed enthusiasm regarding the partnership between public transport operators and the Mayor’s office. He stated, “Bus operators across the region have answered the Mayor’s call to launch a new region-wide Kids Go Free offer, which is great news for local communities. Public transport is an affordable way to travel across the North East and enjoy our coasts, countryside, and everything in between.”

Maxfield’s sentiments reflect a unified effort among transport providers to encourage families to leave their cars at home and embrace public transportation. This collaboration underscores a shared goal of promoting sustainable travel options throughout the region.

Details of the Promotion

The ‘Kids Go Free’ promotion will be in effect for the majority of bus services, including routes operated by well-known providers such as Arriva, Go North East, and Stagecoach. This summer, the offer runs from Saturday, July 20, until Sunday, September 1, allowing families ample opportunity to explore during the break. Specific school holiday dates for the 24/25 academic year will be confirmed later.

Moreover, the Metro and Shields Ferry maintain their commitment to allowing children to travel free with a paying adult all year round, reinforcing the stability and accessibility of this service. However, it is essential for families to note that terms and conditions apply. Notably, the offer is not valid for specific promotional products like the 21 and under tickets or Go North East’s 5-25 products, and certain service exclusions remain in place.

Encouraging Active Community Engagement

By fostering a transport environment where families can travel together at reduced costs, the ‘Kids Go Free’ initiative not only underscores the importance of community but also encourages the exploration of local attractions. Whether taking a trip to the coast, visiting regional parks, or exploring local heritage sites, public transport serves as an ideal means for families to connect with the vibrant offerings of the North East region.

For full details on the terms and conditions of the promotional offer, families can visit the North East Combined Authority’s website at Kids Go Free.

With initiatives like these, the North East is clearly setting a precedent for fostering a community that prioritizes accessibility, affordability, and family engagement. Through collaborative efforts, Mayor Kim McGuinness and local transport operators are paving the way for a happier, more connected region where families can navigate their surroundings with ease.
