Bargain-loving Brits are diving headfirst into a wealth of holiday bargains, with high street travel agents reporting a notable surge in new customer traffic. This uptick signals a gradual return to traditional travel outlets, emphasizing that peace of mind has become the number one priority for cost-conscious families when it comes to vacation planning.
Strong Seasonal Bookings Drive Demand
As the festive season approaches, Christmas and New Year bookings are already up by 12% compared to 2023. The Canary Islands have emerged as the most sought-after vacation spot, with travelers flocking to popular destinations like Tenerife, Lanzarote, and Gran Canaria. Benidorm remains a classic favorite, rounding out the top five locations favored by holidaymakers. This preference for well-known package deals not only indicates a desire for convenience but also reflects an increased reliance on established travel agencies that offer reassurance and affordability.
Looking Ahead: 2024 Travel Trends
The trend doesn’t stop at the holiday season; booking figures for next year are even more promising, with indications that travel is up by 15% compared to this time last year. Families are planning summer holidays with an average length of 10 nights, which accounts for a significant 55% of all reservations. The top European hotspots are Tenerife, Majorca, and the Costa Blanca. For international destinations, travelers are eyeing the allure of the United States, Caribbean getaways, and exotic Thailand.
Seeking Value and Experience
Julia Lo Bue-Said, Chief Executive of The Advantage Travel Partnership, notes, “The appetite for travel continues to grow as consumers seek both value and experience.” This statement encapsulates the current market sentiment as more people turn to travel agents for booking, eager to secure great deals while also enhancing their travel experience. Agent partners across the UK are seeing an influx of new customers who appreciate the peace of mind that comes with the guidance of travel professionals.
Short-Haul vs. Long-Haul: Changing Preferences
While short-haul travel to Europe remains a perennial favorite for many, long-haul destinations are experiencing a surge in popularity, catering to a diverse range of budgets from luxury seekers to those looking for more economical options. Dubai continues to attract families with its array of family-friendly resorts, thrilling shopping experiences, and vibrant entertainment options. Meanwhile, Thailand’s unique blend of affordability and exotic experiences makes it an increasingly popular choice for adventurous travelers.
Countries like Turkey have rapidly climbed the travel chart, primarily due to its exceptional value as the Turkish lira continues to weaken against the pound. In fact, many travelers are opting for all-inclusive packages, with half of all bookings fitting this model. The most common length of stay for holidaymakers is typically around eight nights, reflecting a desire for both relaxation and exploration.
Anticipating the Holiday Exodus
As millions prepare to jet off for the holidays, airports are bracing for an unprecedented travel season. Heathrow is set to experience its busiest December ever, with an estimated 500,000 departures expected from Stansted and Manchester combined. Further figures reveal 400,000 travelers anticipated to leave from Luton, 200,000 from Birmingham, and 175,000 from Bristol, alongside a significant number taking off from Scottish airports. This pattern indicates that the demand for travel is not just rising; it is preparing to surge.
The Christmas Rush: Travel Trends Emerge
Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive of ABTA, highlights the Christmas and New Year period as one of the busiest times for overseas travel. Many holidaymakers are on the lookout for winter sun or snow-capped destinations, seeking opportunities to unwind with loved ones during this festive season. “We encourage people to plan ahead,” he advises, emphasizing the importance of allowing extra time to navigate the anticipated surge in public transport and road traffic.
Climate Influences on Travel Choices
Britain’s unpredictable weather has fueled the desire for a holiday getaway, especially after what has been a tumultuous year for many. The UK experienced its warmest spring on record, juxtaposed against the rainiest since 1986, which likely left many yearning for a respite in sunnier climes. Additionally, amidst July’s status as the hottest month globally, the UK endured its coolest summer since 2015, reinforcing the trend of consumers seeking overseas sun.
According to Visit England’s Christmas trip tracker survey, around 8.8 million people are expected to embark on an overnight holiday in the UK this festive season, contributing approximately £2.5 billion to the economy. This number aligns closely with last year’s figures but indicates a significant rise from the 5.8 million who traveled domestically in 2022.
Patricia Yates, VisitEngland’s chief, remarked, “It is encouraging to see so many of us are planning a short break with friends and family during the festive season, boosting the economy through tourism.” This enthusiasm for domestic travel illustrates a robust willingness to explore local destinations while balancing the allure of international escapes.
This holiday season, residents and visitors in Southampton have an exciting and wallet-friendly travel option at their fingertips. From November 15, 2024, to January 5, 2025, groups of up to five people can take advantage of an enticing offer from Bluestar, Unilink, and select First Solent services: a group ticket for just £5 that allows unlimited bus travel for the entire day.
Building on Past Success
This fantastic offer isn’t new; it was first introduced during the summer months and received an overwhelmingly positive response. Nearly 26,000 group tickets were sold, resulting in savings close to £90,000 for bus travelers. This kind of reception speaks volumes about the appeal of affordable, accessible public transport options during peak travel times.
Participating Services
The group ticket offer applies to all Bluestar and Unilink services running within Southampton. However, it’s important to note that among First Solent services, only the X4 and X5 routes will participate in this special promotion. This makes the bus a viable option for those looking to explore the city or attend events during the festive season.
Encouraging Sustainable Travel
Andrew Wickham, Managing Director of Bluestar and Unilink, expressed enthusiasm for reintroducing the offer this Christmas. He shared, “We are pleased to welcome back this offer for the Christmas period. It gives local people added incentive to leave their cars at home and travel with friends or family by bus to enjoy all the festivities. This will help ease congestion and, of course, it will benefit people’s pockets too.”
The message is clear: by opting for bus travel, not only do passengers save money, but they also contribute to reducing road congestion during a busy time of year.
Southampton’s Christmas Market
The group ticket promotion coincides perfectly with the return of Southampton’s Christmas market, which opens on November 15—the same day the bus offer begins. This market is a dazzling draw for both locals and tourists alike, showcasing a myriad of festive stalls, local crafts, and mouthwatering treats. The bus service provides an excellent alternative for those looking to visit the market without the hassle of parking.
Successful Partnerships
Wickham noted that the partnership between Bluestar, Unilink, and Southampton City Council has played a crucial role in making this promotion possible. He remarked, “Southampton has so much to offer – even more so at this time of year – and we’re looking forward to welcoming more people than ever on-board.” Such collaborations highlight the importance of local entities working together to enhance community services, particularly during the busy Christmas period.
National Fare Cap
In addition to the group ticket benefits, the bus offer will continue even as the national £2 single fare cap concludes on December 31. Following that, the cap will rise to £3, maintaining an affordable option for travelers in the region. This strategic timing ensures that those looking to commute to the multitude of holiday festivities can still do so economically.
Funding and Service Adjustments
This group travel promotion is partly funded by the Department for Transport’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, which was allocated to the council. However, it’s worth noting that budget adjustments mean services will adapt; specifically, 11 of Bluestar’s routes are currently diverting due to construction and street closures, particularly on Bargate Street, as arrangements are made for the Christmas market running until January 10, 2025.
Accessibility During Congestion
While some bus stops such as ASDA/Marlands, Civic Centre, West Quay, and Holyrood Church will be out of service during the construction period, passengers can still access alternative routes and stops. This ensures travelers can navigate the city effectively even amidst the holiday hustle and bustle.
This festive season, grab your friends and family, hop on a bus, and enjoy all that Southampton has to offer—without breaking the bank!

Affordable Transportation for Low-Income Seniors and Persons with Disabilities in British Columbia
Getting around can be a challenge, especially for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities. In recognition of this issue, the British Columbia government has introduced the BC Bus Pass program, offering an affordable solution to those who may struggle with transportation costs. This initiative not only promotes independence but also supports inclusivity by enabling access to essential services and social opportunities.
Understanding the BC Bus Pass Program
The BC Bus Pass program allows eligible individuals to purchase an annual bus pass at a significantly reduced rate. This pass is a boon for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities, providing them with a cost-effective means of transportation throughout the province. The beauty of the BC Bus Pass program lies in its flexibility; the pass can be used on both the BC Transit and TransLink systems, ensuring that users can navigate many areas without the burden of exorbitant travel costs. However, it’s important to note that the HandyDart service, which is specifically designed for those with mobility challenges, is not included in this program.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the reduced-cost bus pass, individuals must meet specific criteria set by the provincial government. Generally, the program targets low-income seniors aged 65 and over, as well as persons with disabilities, which may include a wide range of physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges. Prospective applicants should prepare to provide proof of their eligibility, which may involve submitting relevant documentation regarding income and medical conditions. This vetting process helps ensure that the program benefits those who need it most.

Bella Coola
Gibsons
Powell River
Whistler

Squamish
Metro Vancouver and many more.
This extensive coverage means that individuals across a wide geographic area can access the benefits of the program, making it easier for seniors and persons with disabilities to participate in community activities, medical appointments, and social engagements.
How to Apply
Applying for the BC Bus Pass is a straightforward process designed to ensure accessibility for all. Individuals who wish to apply can find all necessary information on the official BC Bus Pass program website. Here, prospective applicants can review eligibility criteria, required documentation, and detailed application instructions. Additionally, assistance is available through a dedicated helpline. The program facilitates not only essential trips for healthcare but also enhances social inclusion. By enabling users to engage with their communities – whether it’s visiting friends, shopping for groceries, or attending community events – the bus pass plays a crucial role in fostering connections and reducing isolation.
Final Thoughts
The BC Bus Pass program is an essential initiative that genuinely addresses the transportation needs of low-income seniors and persons with disabilities in British Columbia. By providing affordable access to public transit, it affirms the province’s commitment to supporting its most vulnerable residents. Our escape to the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar was pure paradise. According to the Wall Street Journal, “skip-gen” vacations are the latest family travel trend with grandparents leaving parents behind to take their grandchildren on adventures. Come along with me on my luxury “gramping” experience at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar in Nassau, which blended fun, relaxation, and many unique experiences for our 9-year-old grandson.
The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, located in Nassau, Bahamas, is an elegant, luxury resort boasting a Las Vegas vibe set amidst the Caribbean backdrop. This family-friendly resort felt comfortable and welcoming amidst the many kids around. It’s acclaimed for its Jack Nicklaus Signature-designed golf course, a world-class racquet club including pickleball courts, an extravagant casino, a full-service ESPA spa, luxury shopping, an art gallery, and a mini-golf course, alongside a plethora of activities. For ease of planning, downloading the Baha Mar App is highly recommended for reservations and navigating the resort.
A Choice of Luxury Accommodations

This sprawling complex is home to three world-class beachfront hotels – Rosewood, SLS, and Grand Hyatt, which boasts 1,800 rooms spread across East and West Towers. We chose to stay in The Reserve at the Grand Hyatt, a luxurious retreat complete with butler service. Our two-bedroom suite provided breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Each morning, we enjoyed the sunrise from our balcony, setting a magical tone for our day.
Our suite was well-equipped with a kitchen featuring a mini-fridge and microwave, adding convenience to our stay. The Reserve’s dedicated team of three butlers provided impeccable service that truly enhanced our visit, assisting with dinner reservations, ensuring our drinks were always full, handling transportation arrangements, and even guiding us around the expansive resort. Their expertise was invaluable, making everything seamless and enjoyable.
The offerings within The Reserve were also generous, presenting complimentary food and beverages throughout the day. Mornings started with fruits and pastries, including delightful chocolate muffins, alongside fresh lattes for me. In the afternoons, there were cookies for a quick snack and in the evenings, a selection of cheeses and mini-desserts was served, making each day feel special.

One of the standout features of the resort is its collection of six stunning pools, including an adults-only Quiet Pool for relaxation. The new 15-acre waterpark, Baha Bay Club, is a wonderland for kids, complete with a lazy river, wave pool, and 24 exhilarating water slides. We chose to indulge with a cabana rental, which was equipped with a TV, mini-fridge, and lounge chairs, plus fresh fruit and a bottle of Rosé to sip while soaking in the sun. For lunch, we enjoyed the casual dining at Da Poke Bar and El Jefe, relishing fresh flavors and lively atmospheres.

A unique experience awaits at Dean’s Blue Hole Pool, inspired by the breathtaking underwater sinkhole found in the Bahamas. Here, guests can swim among captivating waterfalls and rock walls, with the added thrill of a secluded grotto featuring a window to observe sea turtles and sharks swimming by.

Kids Explorers Club Gives Kids New Experiences
Baha Mar’s Explorers Club is tailored for children aged 3-12, providing exciting activities such as arts and crafts, treasure hunts, and wildlife encounters. While our grandson initially expressed interest in joining the kids’ activities, he ultimately decided to spend time with us, although knowing the Kids Club was an option was reassuring.
Dining Options Ideal for “Gramping” Families
With over 40 diverse dining options, Baha Mar spans experiences from food trucks to fine dining. There’s something to satisfy every craving. Notably, the Kosher food truck, Knosh, is conveniently located near the beach. Almost every place we dined offered a kids’ menu, tailoring the dining experience to younger guests. A highlight was the delicious offerings at The Pizza Lab, featuring irresistible pizzas, gourmet gelato, and refreshing salads.
The resort’s premier dining experience, Fish & Chop House, helmed by celebrated chef Marcus Samuelsson, presents a culinary journey through Ethiopian and soul food. Our grandson enjoyed a classic steak with French fries, while I savored the Colorado Lamb Chops, rich and savory, paired with crispy potatoes and his famed cornbread with rum butter—a true standout.

Each morning, we were greeted at the Regatta Buffet with a delightful array of options, including made-to-order omelets, a carving station, and an abundance of homemade desserts, setting off our days right. Lunches were equally satisfying, with hearty meals at Sam’s Crispy Chicken and delightful rainbow sliders at Sugar Factory, which also houses a candy store worth exploring.
Go Wild at The Sanctuary
One of the most captivating aspects of our stay at Baha Mar was the opportunity for unique wildlife experiences for our grandson. The resort emphasizes conservation education and offers interactive programs. At the Flamingo Meet & Greet, we delved into their feeding habits and the fascinating journey they undertake to develop their iconic pink hue, primarily from beta-carotene in their diet. We also visited the Aldabra Tortoises, getting an up-close experience with their gentle nature, and younger guests can participate in programs like ‘Junior Marine Biologist’ and ‘Meet the Macaws.’

Explore Historic Nassau
Nassau, founded in 1670, is the capital and largest city of The Bahamas, rich in history and culture. Its landmarks include old forts, Parliament Square, and Blackbeard’s Tower. We visited the 18th-century Graycliff Castle, built by the notorious pirate John Graysmith. The castle boasts the first five-star restaurant in the Bahamas as well as the third-largest wine cellar globally. Dining at Graycliff Restaurant was a treat, highlighted by a Caesar salad, a prime beef filet paired with bearnaise sauce, and a sumptuous salmon entrée. We couldn’t resist pre-ordering their famous chocolate soufflé, which we enjoyed with abandon. The next day, eager to learn more, we took a tour at Graycliff Chocolatier, where we tried our hand at chocolate-making.

To taste authentic local cuisine, a visit to Arawak Cay is a must. This area, known as “Fish Fry,” offers a plethora of casual dining options where you can savor seafood delicacies, listen to live music, and sip on a piña colada while enjoying conch fritters.
Our wildlife adventures continued at the Ardastra Gardens and Wildlife Conservation Centre, focused on bird rescue and rehabilitation. Here, our grandson witnessed the famed flamingos parading, touched a snake, and enjoyed a fun tree swing.

The popular Queen’s Staircase, a walkway of 66 steps built by slaves between 1793 and 1794, is a serene space adorned with a cascading waterfall. Named in honor of Queen Victoria, who abolished slavery in 1837, it is free to access and is notably easier to walk down than up.

For shopping enthusiasts, the famous Straw Market offers t-shirts, handcrafted straw baskets, wood carvings, and an array of local delicacies, ensuring you leave with some unique souvenirs.
As our “gramping” vacation came to a close and we headed to the airport laden with rum cakes and t-shirts, I asked our grandson what his favorite part of the trip was among all the memorable experiences. His simple response—“Just being with you”— was a heartfelt reminder that the true joy of our journey was in spending quality time together.
PayPal Unveils Innovative Money Pooling Feature, Simplifying Group Expenses Between Family and Friends
In an effort to enhance the way people manage collective finances, PayPal has launched an exciting new feature that simplifies how groups can pool money for shared expenses. Announced on November 14, 2024, this innovative addition to the PayPal app allows users to effortlessly gather funds with friends and family for various occasions, including group gifts, travel plans, and special events.
The Need for Group Money Management
Everyday life is filled with moments that call for shared contributions—whether it’s buying a birthday gift for a loved one or organizing a trip with friends. As social gatherings and collaborative plans become more common, finding an efficient way to manage the finances associated with these activities has become essential. According to a recent survey by PayPal, Americans pooled money on approximately 86 million occasions last year alone, showcasing just how integral this practice has become.
John Anderson, GM and SVP of Consumer at PayPal, articulated the company’s vision: “Everyday life is all about connections.” His remarks underscore the importance of simplifying those social transactions, helping people navigate both the social and financial aspects of life seamlessly.
How the Money Pooling Feature Works
Setting up and managing a money pool in the PayPal app is simple—and perhaps more importantly, it’s free. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how users can start pooling funds:
Start a Pool: Users can quickly access the "Pool Money" option in the app menu or under "More Options" in the “Send/Request” tab.
Customize Your Pool: Choose a title, write a description, set a target date, and optionally set a goal amount for contributions.
Invite Contributors: Users can share their personalized pool link through text, email, WhatsApp, and other channels, making it easy for friends and family to chip in.
Collect Contributions: Friends and family can contribute directly to the pool via the provided link.
Access Your Funds: Whenever the organizer is ready, they can transfer the pooled funds to their PayPal balance for spending, or withdraw to a linked bank account.
The ability for individuals to contribute without needing a PayPal account adds to the feature’s convenience, making it accessible for everyone involved.
Security and Peace of Mind
When pooling money, security is paramount. PayPal ensures that every transaction is protected with robust security measures, including 24/7 fraud monitoring and advanced encryption. This means that users can collect and manage funds with confidence, knowing their transactions are safeguarded.
Use Cases That Shine
The potential applications of the money pooling feature are vast. Group gifts for birthdays, weddings, or holidays become straightforward, as do arrangements for shared travel expenses. The feature also caters to special events like concerts, parties, and community projects. With the digital landscape constantly evolving, it’s crucial for people to have reliable tools that facilitate collaboration and connection.
Additional Features for Sending Money
In addition to the new pooling feature, PayPal continues to make sending and receiving money straightforward. Here’s a quick guide on how users can send money through the app:
Navigate to "Send/Request": This section is where all transactions begin.
Choose the Recipient: Users can enter the recipient’s PayPal username, email, or mobile number.
Specify the Amount: Clearly enter the amount to send and select the currency. Personalization options, including messages and animations, add a friendly touch.
Review and Send: Before finalizing, users can review transaction details to ensure everything is correct, then click “Send.”
Global Reach and Availability
Initially rolling out in the US, Germany, Italy, and Spain, the money pooling feature reflects PayPal’s commitment to providing more localized experiences that resonate with users’ needs. The global reach of this tool promotes not just financial efficiency, but also enhances the social dynamics of money management among groups.
By integrating these features into everyday financial interactions, PayPal is not only addressing a practical need but also fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility among users. The introduction of the money pooling feature is a significant step forward in reshaping how individuals handle joint expenses, reinforcing PayPal’s role as a leader in the digital financial landscape.
