Taiwan Is Rapidly Emerging as a Destination for Outdoor Adventure and Wellness Enthusiasts

Discovering Taiwan: An Outdoor Paradise Beyond Expectations

Taiwan is emerging as a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts and travelers alike, boasting a stunning array of landscapes, vibrant cultures, and thrilling adventures. Nestled in East Asia, this island nation has much to offer, from towering mountains to serene beaches, making it a prime destination for those seeking both adventure and relaxation.

Nature’s Playground

Imagine more than 260 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), lush hiking trails carved by Indigenous peoples thousands of years ago, and national parks that showcase Taiwan’s natural beauty. Although it might evoke images of Chile or New Zealand, this breathtaking scenery belongs to Taiwan, a gem that’s roughly the size of Belgium or Massachusetts.

Taiwan is not just a magnificent backdrop for outdoor activities; it also presents a plethora of opportunities for relaxation. After an exhilarating day of hiking or cycling, visitors can unwind in climate-controlled comfort, indulge in gourmet cuisine, and recharge at upscale lodges set amid stunning landscapes.

A Flourishing Outdoor Culture

According to Kate Chen from Taiwan Tourism Administration, the surge in outdoor sports in Taiwan can be attributed to its diverse landscapes and compact size. “The varied terrain is perfect for a broad spectrum of adventure sports, and the island’s small size makes exploring these destinations a breeze,” she explains.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also played an influential role in the outdoor tourism boom, as travel restrictions encouraged locals to explore domestically. Michael McCreesh, founder of Taiwan Outdoors, remarked that many young adults took to hiking and cycling when international travel became limited.

Wellness and Nature Retreats

While wilderness camping and backpacking in Taiwan might still be relatively rare, luxurious resorts in breathtaking locations are on the rise. For instance, the Silks Place Taroko resort offers five-star comfort while nestled in the magnificent Taroko Gorge. Guests can enjoy spa treatments, swimming pools, and yoga sessions, with quick access to scenic hiking trails like the Baiyang Trail, known for its tunnels and waterfalls.

Another exquisite option is The Lalu at Sun Moon Lake. With gorgeous lake-view suites complete with private balconies and fireplaces, it provides a tranquil setting to unwind. The 30-kilometer (18-mile) bike trail circling the lake is ranked among the world’s top cycling routes, making it a popular spot for both adventurers and leisure cyclists.

Just a short drive from Taipei lies the Volando Urai Spring Spa & Resort, where visitors can enjoy luxurious accommodations featuring private hot spring bathhouse rooms and beautiful garden views. The surrounding area offers numerous hiking opportunities, ensuring that wellness and exploration go hand in hand.

Exploring Taiwan’s Rich National Parks

Taiwan is home to 10 national parks and 19 national forest recreation areas, showcasing various terrains from coastlines and coral atolls to dense subtropical forests and towering mountains. The national parks emphasize preservation and conservation while encouraging public access and visitation to the stunning natural beauty.

Taroko National Park, perhaps the island’s most famous nature reserve, is known for its breathtaking gorge formed by the Liwu River. Visitors can traverse several hiking trails, cross suspension bridges, and enjoy guided sunrise kayaking experiences along the Qingshui sea cliffs, providing a unique perspective of the region.

Yushan National Park, home to Taiwan’s highest peak, is another must-visit destination. Rising nearly 4,000 meters (13,100 feet), Jade Mountain provides a fantastic backdrop for captivating sunrises, with views that some travelers describe as life-changing.

Hiking Trails and Outdoor Adventures

Hiking ranks as one of the best ways to explore Taiwan’s natural beauty. The island offers thousands of trails ranging from easy urban routes to challenging wilderness hikes. According to McCreesh, both wilderness and urban trails now cater to visitors keen on immersion in nature.

The AllTrails app lists over 900 hiking routes, including family-friendly options. For the more adventurous, the numerous multiday treks often lead through the traditional territories of Taiwan’s 29 Indigenous groups, providing a culturally rich experience.

Among the popular hiking routes is the Alangyi Historic Trail, which winds along one of Taiwan’s last undeveloped coastlines. This historic path served Indigenous tribes for centuries and now invites visitors to take in spectacular views while walking along its pebble beaches.

Adventure Awaits: Surfing, Diving, and More

Beyond hiking and biking, Taiwan is a treasure trove of outdoor adventures, including scuba diving, rock climbing, and sea kayaking. The island’s east coast provides ideal surfing conditions, often with fewer crowds. Local surf schools like Taiwan Surf Travel offer packages combining accommodation and gear rental for those eager to catch some waves in Hualien.

For those with a thirst for even more excitement, whitewater rafting on the Xiuguluan River presents an adrenaline-fueled experience. Guided trips often stop at local Indigenous villages, giving adventurers a taste of Taiwan’s culture and history.

Taiwan may still be an under-the-radar destination for many travelers, but its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and host of outdoor activities undoubtedly position it as a must-see location for adventure seekers and relaxation enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re summiting peaks, cycling along scenic routes, or savoring gourmet dishes at luxury resorts, Taiwan offers a unique blend of experiences waiting to be discovered.
