Upcoming Enhancements and New Services for London Transport in 2025

London Transport in 2025: What to Expect

2024 was a transformative year for London’s transport system, witnessing exciting developments such as the launch of the Superloop, the introduction of innovative ‘tram-buses,’ and significant renaming efforts within the London Overground network. As we look ahead to 2025, substantial changes and enhancements are on the horizon, fueled by adjustments in fare structures and investments aimed at improving services. Here’s what Londoners can anticipate in their daily commutes come 2025.

New Eco Buses

In a significant move towards sustainable transport, Go-Ahead, London’s largest bus company, has ordered 1,000 new electric buses, with many set to be operational from early 2025. Routes including R1, R3, R4, R8, and 233, running between Eltham and Swanley, will benefit from this upgrade, contributing to a cleaner, greener future for the city’s bus services. This rollout not only aims to reduce emissions but also enhances comfort and efficiency for passengers.

Direct Eurostar Trains to Amsterdam

After a nearly year-long suspension, the direct Eurostar service linking London to Amsterdam will resume on February 10, 2025. This long-awaited return eliminates the need for travelers to change trains in Brussels, making the journey more convenient. Although the service will pause briefly again from March 30, it is expected to return in full operation by the end of April. This improvement will reconnect London with the vibrant culture and business of Amsterdam seamlessly.

The Silvertown Tunnel

Aiming to ease congestion around the Thames, the Silvertown Tunnel, set to open in spring 2025, promises to be a significant infrastructure addition. Connecting Silvertown in Newham to Greenwich, this £2.2 billion project caters to both motorists and cyclists and will enforce a toll during peak hours to manage traffic flow effectively. With its upcoming launch, the tunnel is already generating considerable buzz and debate about its impact on local traffic patterns.

The Final Superloop Bus Route

Complementing the Silvertown Tunnel, the SL4 Superloop route from Canary Wharf to Grove Park is anticipated to commence once the tunnel is operational. This completion finishes the extensive Superloop bus network, designed to provide faster connections across the capital. By linking key areas with increased frequency and efficiency, the Superloop aims to reshape how Londoners navigate the city.

The Orbit Clipper

London will also welcome its first all-electric ferry service, the Orbit Clipper, which is set to start operations by March 2025. This innovative service will ferry passengers between Canary Wharf and Rotherhithe, aiming to accommodate approximately 20,000 travelers every weekday. This addition not only promotes eco-friendly transport options but also enhances connectivity across the Thames for commuters and tourists alike.

New Operator for the Lizzie Line

In an exciting development for one of London’s newest train lines, the Elizabeth line, a new operator will take charge from May 2025. GTS Rail Operations Limited, a collaboration between Go Ahead Group, Tokyo Metro, and Sumitomo Corporation, aims to bring fresh expertise to the line’s operation. This change is expected to improve service efficiency and passenger experience on this vital transport route.

End of Santander Cycles Sponsorship

May 2025 marks the end of Santander’s sponsorship of London’s cycle hire scheme. While the future branding and sponsorship details are yet to be confirmed, this shift may pave the way for a rebranding of the well-loved bikes-for-hire across the city. The implications of this transition could be notable for those who rely on this affordable and convenient transport option, making it a point of interest for cyclists in London.

Congestion Charge for Zero Emission Vehicles

In a surprising move set to take effect from December 25, 2025, electric vehicle drivers will no longer enjoy exemptions from the congestion charge. This shift means that drivers of zero emissions vehicles will need to pay £15 per day to enter certain parts of London. As the city adjusts its policy, it remains to be seen how this will impact the adoption of electric vehicles and congestion patterns within the urban landscape.

New Piccadilly Line Trains

One of the highlights anticipated for late 2025 is the introduction of new Piccadilly line trains. These innovative trains promise to enhance the traveling experience with wider doors, air-conditioned carriages, and modern designs. The 94 trains will gradually enter service, with the full fleet expected to be operational by 2027. This modernization effort reflects London’s commitment to providing contemporary, efficient transport to its residents.

New DLR Trains

While the rollout of new air-conditioned Docklands Light Railway (DLR) trains has faced delays, there’s hope that they will still debut in 2025. Currently postponed and on an indefinite timeline, these new trains represent an upgrade to the existing fleet, aiming for improved comfort and reliability for passengers in a bustling part of London.

As 2025 unfolds, these transport improvements signal a dynamic evolution in London’s infrastructure, focused on sustainability, efficiency, and enhanced passenger experience. The coming year promises to reshape not only how Londoners travel but also how they connect with the myriad of opportunities and experiences that the city has to offer.
